Unusual Baby Names
Great care must be taken when giving unusual baby names to
your babies. While you may think that a unique name is cute or has some personal
meaning attached to it, the fact is your child will have to live his or her
entire life with an unusual first name. That's a risky thing to lay on your
baby!
This is not to suggest that unusual names are always poor
choices. On the contrary, a one-of-a-kind name often makes a baby memorable to
all who meet him or her. As long as the name you choose isn't, well, silly, then
your child will grow up with something his childhood and adolescent friends will
think is 'cool.' Then, when he's older, that extraordinary name will distinguish
him among his adult friends and acquaintances. An unusual name can actually be
an advantage for your baby as he grows up - but your choice must be wise!
A good idea when sifting through a list of unusual names for
babies is to look for spelling variations for common names. A few examples
include: Thom (Tom), Kari (Carrie), Mikal (Michael), Geoff (Jeff), and Marc
(Mark). This will give your baby the advantage of growing up with a "normal"
sounding name that the people he meets will remember for the unusual spelling.
Saying such names out loud will not be a source of potential embarrassment, but
seeing it written will set him apart.
Of course, another option for picking unusual names for your
new baby is to find one that was actually pretty common in by-gone eras. You can
find these kinds of names by searching the Web for baby names from different
years. Some sites will list popular names from as far back as two or three
